Washington/Aug. 12, 1936" duplex cancel on cover to United States, cover signed by Gold Medal Winners, Jesse Owens and Frank Wyckoff, signed on reverse by Ralph Metcalfe and Archie Williams, open at left & right ends just affecting the Ralph Metcalfe signature, Very Fine. Scott No. B86  Estimate $200 - 300. James Cleveland "Jesse" Owens (September 12, 1913 ? March 31, 1980) was an African-American track and field athlete who specialized in the sprints and the long jump. He participated in the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany, where he achieved international fame by winning four gold medals: one each in the 100 meters, the 200 meters, the long jump, and as part of the 4x100 meter relay team. Frank Clifford Wyckoff (October 29, 1909 ? January 1, 1980) was an American athlete, triple gold medal winner in 4x100 m relay at the 1928, 1932 and 1936 Olympic Games.Archibald ("Archie") Franklin Williams (May 1, 1915 ? June 24, 1993) was an African-American athlete and winner of 400 meter run at the 1936 Summer Olympics. When asked about the infamous incident in which Adolf Hitler reportedly refused to shake the hand of black fellow gold medalist Jesse Owens, Williams replied, "Hitler wouldn't shake my hand either."Ralph Harold Metcalfe (May 30, 1910 ? October 10, 1978) was an African-American athlete who came second to Jesse Owens in the 100 meters at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. He received a gold medal as part of the winning 4?100 meter relay team. Cancelled by Berlin/17.8.36 machine cancel, at top left is violet handstamp of the "Olympia-Verkehrs- und Quartieramt" (Olympic Housing Bureau), Very Fine and unusual. Estimate  $200 - 300. This card from the Olympic Housing Bureau is posted one day after the close of the Games and has type written message allowing the landlord a free hand in renting a (requisitioned) room. Airmail cover franked with Olympic Souvenir Sheet with additional 50pf airmail addressed to Berlin, cancelled by "Frankfurt/Rhein-Main/1.8.36" postmark & magenta Zeppelin Olympic flight cachet with "Berlin-Zentralflughafen/1.8.36" backstamp, cover slightly reduced at left just affecting souvenir sheet by about 2½mm, Very Fine. Estimate  $200 - 300. The Olympic flight started on Frankfurt on the morning of August 1st. The first day of issue/sale of the Olympic souvenir sheet was on the same day. They were not however available for sale in Frankfurt, therefore it was generally not possible to get a flown first day cover of the souvenir sheet. The few covers that do exist were generated from stamp dealers who had been sent the souvenir sheet in advance. $0 (Image)
