Genl. Ripley returned last evening from No. Edisto. We got a permit for Jimmy to return…", Very Fine, this letter portrays an excellent picture of the situation presented to Charleston businessmen by the Union blockade.

Richard Parker (1810-1893) was a 19th century politician, Lawyer and Judge from Virginia. During his capacity as Judge of the 13th Judicial Circuit of Virginia from 1851 to 1869, he pronounced the death sentence for abolitionist John Brown, who was captured at Harpers Ferry after his unsuccessful attempt to raise an insurrection in 1859.

Confederacy, 1862, 5¢ blue, Archer & Daly printing. Horizontal pair, four margins, cancelled by partial "Goodson" Virginia straight-line (SL-03C) postmark on cover to Miss Margaret F. Foglesong at Sharon Va., Fine and scarce Goodson straightline use.

The likely sender was Private Crockett Foglesong, the addressee's cousin, of Co. B. 29th Va Inf. In late 1863 and early 1864, the unit was assigned to the Department of the Southwest Virginia and East Tennessee and was therefore in the Goodson area at the time of the straightline use. The SL-03C without the month is third state known used from Nov. 1863 into 1864. The three states of the Goodson straightline cancel was published in the Confederate Philatelist Jan-Feb 1994.

Reunited strip of five (pair and strip of three) mounted on gray card stock, large margins except pair touched at bottom, cancelled by six strikes of "Army of Tenn" straightline army field cancel; flaws incl. small tone spot at bottom on joining stamps, Very Fine appearance.

THE ONLY RECORDED "ARMY OF TENN" STRAIGHTLINE CANCELS ON THE 2¢ BROWN RED.

Sometime in the past, the strip of five was removed from cover and cut into two and dispersed to different collectors. Conrad Bush discovered these at separate times and reunited them to its original form as described in a Confederate Philately Sep-Oct 2003 article.

Strip of four with mostly huge margins with scissor cut between last two stamps, tied by two strikes of "Canton Miss., Jan 19" on 1864 homemade brown cover to Lake Village, Arkansas, original Nov. 20th 1863 letter with some war content "…we heard yesterday of another battle in Virginia…we have had quite a battle below Canton…the roar of cannon all over the country was terrific…", letter was apparently held for posting due to the heavy fighting around Canton; third stamp scuff, some light overall toning and wear, Fine and rare 40¢ Trans-Miss. rate use.

A RARE WESTBOUND TRANS-MISSISSIPPI EXPRESS COVER BEARING A 10¢ ENGRAVED STRIP OF FOUR.

The Walske-Trepel Special Routes book states fewer than 50 westbound Trans-Mississippi express covers are known, making them about three-times scarcer than eastbound covers. This cover is from a new Trans-Mississippi Express find in 2002 and is the subject of a Confederate Philatelist article by Bush-Jaronski in Jul-Aug 2002 issue that details the full research on the cover and family. Illustrated on p. 260 of "The Collector's Guide to Confederate Philately, Second Edition".
