Steamship Aug 31 / 10" arrival below, corresponding departure and arrival docketing on back, filing fold and other defects through the stamp, additional franking (probably 2x1c ocher) missing, nevertheless fine appearing and possibly the earliest usage recorded of the 1871 Issue on cover (Goodman "Guatemala" illustrated the earliest cover dated October 10, 1871) ( Lanman & Kemp was a multi-generational family firm of wholesale druggists in New York City. Their records document the operations of the wholesale drug business in the years before the development of modern pharmaceuticals) cat. $3000 (Cat No. 3) (Image)

1878 The Indian Woman Issue, 1/2r yellow green, single franking, tied by large numeral "9" in oval on cover (reduced at left) from Mazatenango to Retalhuleu, with "Correos De Mazatenango June 16, 1878" cds alongside, fine cover, with 1985 Peter Holcombe certificate ("a very scarce stamp on cover") (Goodman's census lists eight covers and one front with 1/2r yellow green franking, plus one or two others. Most of these are in multiple frankings or in combination with other values or issues. Only four covers are single frankings paying the internal domestic rate. This cover is especially rare, being the earliest domestic usage known with this stamp), cat. $1750 (Cat No. 11) (Image)

Cat No:18

1881 Provisional Issue, surcharged 5 Centavos on 1/2r green (Indian Woman), tied by blue grids on cover headed "J Rufino Barios" (President of Guatemala) and sent on 14 Sep 1881 from Guatemala City to Paris, red and magenta departure datestamps, fully intact Seal of the President on back, minor cover mending at top, fine, ex-Lange, with 1979 Royal certificate. The Centavos surcharged Provisionals on the entry of Guatemala into the UPU are surprisingly rare used on cover. Goodman lists a total of only four covers of all values, three of which are the 5c on 1/2r yellow green. All three of these covers are to England which is unusual as this is an underpayment of the ten centavos rate. The cover offered here is not listed by Goodman. The provisional 5c single foreign rate was only valid for 68 days (Aug.1-Oct.7,1881) cat. $2000 (Cat No. 18) (Image)
