1871-1881 The Max Plantinga Gold Medal Collection Exhibit collection neatly mounted and knowledgeably written up on 80 pages. This being a traditional exhibit the collection includes proofs, mint singles & multiples, varieties, used with cancellation & covers showing an array of rates & usages. Organised in chronological order as follows: – 1871 Arms First Issue – Pages 2-32: Showing 1c sunken die proof in black, 1c proof showing single die in original colour, 1c to 20c in unused & used multiples some being the largest recorded, imperfs., gutter blocks, varieties incl. printed both sides, 5c tête-bêche pairs with the rarer being imperf., 20c blue error of colour, shades, array of numeral town cancels, plus an extensive & valuable assembly of fifteen first issue covers some with unique or very rare frankings – 1873 Arms Second Issue – Pages 33-36: Showing both 4r & 1p value with mint, used, town & colour cancels, plus three cover including 1p yellow single on cover front to Cadiz, Spain, 4r mauve, two cover with single frankings to France & Switzerland – 1875 Liberty Third Issue – Pages 37-48: Showing all four values in bottom sheet marginal inscription blocks of twenty, plus die proofs for three different values, used singles with town & colour cancels, also a fine array of seven covers or part covers with two 1r blue bisect usages & Fiscal 1/2r used on local cover – 1878 Indian Head Fourth Issue – Pages 49-75: Showing die proofs & plate proofs, all four value with mint singles & blocks, some with watermark varieties, inscriptional multiples, imperfs, imperf between pairs, misperfs. etc., plus an extensive & valuable assembly of ten Indian Head covers including extremely rare mixed franking with British Honduras, also three usages on fiscal documents, used selection with town & colour cancels – 1879 Small Quetzal Fifth Issue – Pages 76-80: Showing die proofs for both values, mint multiples, used with fancy cancels, 1/4r on cover to Paris & 1r bisect on part cover front A wonderful collection and an excellent basis on which to build a Large Gold Medal collection Provenance: Some items from the following collections Cervera, Hubbard, Lange, Madden, Spycher & Wyler Expertise: Some of the better items with certs. from Brian Moorhouse Estimate: € 80’000 – € 120’000 (Image)
