1938 (Dec 2) Deutsche Lufthansa crash of the Berlin-Baghdad flight near Vienna, reportedly the only known cover (though Nierinck illustrates another) from a small part of the mail recovered. It had been returned to sender, and is offered together with letter (small faults) from Chemnitz P.O. datelined 31 May 1939 replying to the sender’s query about the circumstances (not, as Nierinck states, enclosed with the recovered mail) (Nierinck 381202a) (Image)

1937 (May) Hindenburg Disaster, an exceptional cover franked by 1936 special set of two tied by Sieger type IX “on board” cds of 5.5.1937, singed at top and partly at left though showing 50pf and much of 75pf intact, addressed to New York City and contained in US Post Office glassine carrier with three Post Office seals on reverse. Wonderful showpiece, one of only a few dozen surviving covers with the type IX cancel and a great “foundation” or “capstone” item for a Zeppelin or “crash mail” collection. (Image)
