1913 German-English Airship Expedition, 2pf and 1m, set of two, first one l.h., the latter sheet corner margin example n.h., v.f. (In 1913, the three colonial powers began planning for a joint expedition to New Guinea with the purpose of exploring and mapping the interior of the island via airship. The Dutch backed out of the project at its very beginning, with the Germans and English continuing to schedule a planned expedition. The project assembled a joint British-German crew for the airship, with scientists from both countries. The Airship Expedition was scheduled for the second half of 1914, exactly the time when World War I broke out. In August German Zeppelin dirigibles were being used to drop bombs on British cities) (Cat No. Si.I-II) (Image)
