1838 (Dec. 19) Odell Town, Canada to London, England via Montreal. Docketed outer folded letter sheet with faint red "Montreal, L.C., JA 4, 1839" cds and matching "Paid" handstamp with red manuscript "37½" for prepayment at the double rate to New York, second "Paid" handstamp and red "9" pence rating for double the 4½d postage to U.S. border, plus 25 cents freight money (not shown, as was the custom at the Montreal Post Office), red "New-York Jan 8" cds, carried by Blue Swallowtail Line Roscoe from New York Jan. 8th to Liverpool arriving Jan. 29th, "Liverpool/Ship Letter" two-line backstamp and rated "4/9" due for the triple rate to London (11d inland plus 8d ship), red London (1.30) arrival backstamp, F.-V.F., A scarce freight-money cover from Canada.
Estimate; $500 - 750.

This letter was probably carried privately to Montreal, about 20 miles north of Odell Town.

1839 (Feb. 19) Philadelphia Pa. to London, England. Datelined folded cover with blue "Philadelphia Pa., Feb 23" cds and matching boxed "Paid" with black ms. "75" due rating as prepayment of double inland rate to New York plus double the 25¢ freight money fee for two sheets, red "New York Feb 25" cds, carried as endorsed by pioneer steamship Great Western from New York Feb. 25th to Bristol arriving Mar. 12th, black boxed "Bristol/Ship Letter" and ms. "4/9" due for three sheets: triple 8d ship plus triple 11d inland to London, a Very Fine freight money letter carried by the Pioneer Steamship "Great Western"., ex-Arthur White.
Estimate; $200 - 300.

Philadelphia collected the freight-money fee and forwarded it to the New York postmaster, who paid the steamship company. This was Great Western's sixth return voyage.

1839 (Feb. 24) Philadelphia Pa. to Vienna, Austria via London. Datelined folded letter addressed to J. Randolph Clay, Secretary of the U.S. Legation, in care of forwarder in London, with blue "Philada. Pa. Feb 24" cds with matching "Paid" framed handstamp and red manuscript "37½" combined freight money rating of 25¢ freight money fee for a steamship plus 12½¢ inland fee to N.Y., red "New-York Feb 25" cds, carried by Great Western from New York Feb. 25th to Bristol Mar. 12th, "Bristol Ship-Letter" stepped handstamp and manuscript "1/5" due rating, London (3.13, 3.15) backstamps, red "England over Rotterdam" two-line script backstamp, various ratings including red crayon "24", ms. "20", red ms. "24" plus "14" totaled "38", etc.; light fold soiling, a Very Fine and scarce freight money use to Austria.

1839 (Dec. 12) Richmond, Va. to Liverpool, England. Folded letter with red "Richmond Va. Dec. 12" cds and matching "Paid" h.s. with red manuscript "18¾" cent rating for postage to New York, reverse with matching red "Steam" and "Paid" h.s. with manuscript "25" rating for freight money fee, carried by Transatlantic S.S. Co. Liverpool from New York Dec. 15 to Liverpool arriving Jan. 11, "Liverpool/Ship Letter" backstamp with "8" pence due rating for ship fee, F.-V.F., Carried on the Final Return Voyage of the Transatlantic S.S. Co. "Liverpool" and the first sailing showing the uniform 8d rate.
Estimate; $300 - 400.

"Liverpool" put into Fayal, Azores on Dec. 31st for coal. She departed there on Jan. 4th in the evening for Liverpool according to John Pollock, the Liverpool agent for the Line.

1840 (Jun. 26) Charleston S.C. to Greenock, Scotland. Datelined folded letter with red crayon "1d" rating for local pickup, entered mails with red "Charleston S.C. Jun. 26" cds and matching "Paid" handstamp with "25" cent rating for freight money steamship fee and additional "Paid" handstamp with manuscript "25" cent rating for postage, carried as endorsed by Great Western from New York to Bristol, red "Bristol / Ship Letter" two-line handstamp with manuscript "1/4" pence due rating for double the 8d ship letter rate; some edge wear and splitting, F.-V.F.
Estimate; $200 - 300.

The red crayon "1d" is present on a number of Charleston S.C. letter and is probably a carrier fee notation.

1846 (Aug. 15) New York N.Y. to Cognac, France. Datelined folded letter endorsed "p. Great Western" and with New York pencil "50" rating for double the 25¢ steamship freight money fee, carried by Great Western from New York Aug. 20th to Liverpool arriving Sep. 3rd, red London (9.4) backstamp and matching "Colonies & Art. 13" framed accountancy handstamp, additional "SHIP-LETTER" straightline (Robertson S36) on back, red Boulogne (9.8) entry cds with manuscript "28" decimes as "10" gram letter, but cross out and updated to "43" decimes as "15" gram letter, Very Fine and scarce freight money use to France.
Estimate; $300 - 400.

The 43 decimes postage due in France was for 20 decimes due the U.K. and 23 decimes French internal postage for a distance of 570 km from Boulogne to Cognac.
