1949 Black and Blue Lafayette Perforated Trial Essay, five strips of 10 Type I stamps (with "Lafayette"), including two with sheet margins at top, with traces of original gum, very fine. This stamp essay that was manufactured by printers Lambert-Marioni as an example of their work, presented to the French Government for their approval. The vignette was engraved by Jules Piel, based on an original engraving by Duplessis. The letters "STIF" at bottom stand for Services Techniques des Impressions Fiduciaires.
