(4) Fractional Gold Tokens round and octagonal dated 1857, 1861, 1880, and one undated. Though not regular issues per se, these tokens were made widely by private jewelers of the day. The Breen & Gillio text on these tokens states, " . . . . no longer required for currency, these tiny gold coins were still admired as souvenirs of the gold rush . . . . . In time, they became a national fad and were sold coast to coast. But their denominations made them susceptible to fraudulent use, and the government . . . . finally determined that they violated the Private Coinage Act of 1864, leading to their total suspension by 1883."
