Falkland Islands Dependencies: South Orkneys: Signy Island, Base H 1952 (Feb. 11) airmail envelope sent by meteorologist Anthony Vernum (with endorsement on flap) in his second Polar season to his future wife Margaret Murphy in Leicester, franked by Thin Map 1s. at 5g. airmail rate, tied by H1 c.d.s. Collected from the base by H.M.S. “Burghead Bay” on Feb. 16. Vernum returned to England in 1953 and married in 1958 but sadly died on Sept 30 that year aged only 25. Photo. (Image1)

Falkland Islands Dependencies: South Orkneys: Signy Island, Base H 1953 (Apr. 15) Army air letter form W.3077 written and signed by Gwillym Owen, Base Radio Operator to his sister in Swansea, correctly franked by Thin Map 6d. tied by H1v1 c.d.s. (two digit year entered in ms. as metal canceller slug was not available, the replacement canceller H2 arriving in Dec. 1953). The letter comments that this latest letter will arrive before the previous two as it would travel by air from Montevideo to England rather than by sea. Collected by the “John Biscoe” on Apr. 17, arriving in Stanley on Apr. 24. Photo. (Image1)
