Falkland Islands Dependencies: South Georgia: The small “South Georgia” imprint, 1911 (Dec. 16) “DEUTSCHE ANTARKTISCHE/EXPEDITION” envelope registered to Buenos Aires bearing attractive three colour franking of 1904-12 1/2d. (3), 1d. and 21/2d. horizontal pairs tied by SG1 c.d.s’s and with imprint struck four times across the adhesives, once diagonally across single 1/2d., endorsed on flap sent by “Vahsel” and with SG1 registration label (slightly stained) at left. Rare, just one other similar cover from this expedition has been recorded. Richard Vahsel (1868-1912) was the controversial captain of the expedition ship “Deutschland” but died of heart failure (believed aggravated by the effects of syphilis) on Aug. 8 1912 whilst his ship was trapped in the Weddell Sea and was buried in the ice.
