Chaplin, Base Leader at Port Lockroy after reopening of Base A, with Eugene, Oregon May 8 machine arrival and subsequently redirected to Montgomery and Portland. Brookfield, Base D meteorologist to friends in Kent, an interesting message with typed sender’s endorsement, correctly franked by Thin Map 6d. with clear D2 c.d.s. The mail was duly collected by the R.R.S. “John Biscoe” on Mar. 1 and arrived in Stanley on Apr. 24. Receiver’s ms endorsement notes arrival in Sidcup as July 16, a transit time of 4 months, 17 days. Falkland Islands Dependencies: Graham Land: Stonington Island Base E 1947 (Feb. 13) ‘internal’ cover to Stanley addressed to James Wordie c/o David Roberts (incorrectly addressed as “H.W.”), Colonial Manager of the Falkland Islands Co. at Stanley House, correctly franked by Thick Map 1/2d. pair tied by clear E1 c.d.s’s in violet with Apr. 19 PS.3 arrival backstamp. Wordie was serving as a member of the F.I.D.S. Advisory Committee and was undertaking a tour of the bases to assess progress, travelling on S.S. “Fitzroy” in company with M.V. “Trepassey”. Falkland Islands Dependencies: Graham Land: Stonington Island Base E 1948 (Feb. 22) cover addressed by Sir Vivian Fuchs to the Treasurer, Karl Lellman, in Stanley, franked Thick Map 1d. cancelled by E1 c.d.s. in violet incorrectly dated “20 FEB 1947” and with “Fuchs” endorsement to indicate the account to be charged for the postage, flap missing otherwise fine. Fuchs had joined the Base that day as the new leader, arriving on R.R.S. “John Biscoe”. Karl Lellman had returned to work for the civil service in 1946 and in 1948 was appointed Town Clerk to the newly instituted and elected Town Council. Photo. (Image1)

Falkland Islands Dependencies: Graham Land: Argentine Islands, Base F 1953 (May 14) envelope to Doncaster franked Thin Map 21/2d. tied by F2 c.d.s’s, with enclosed letter on F.I.D.S. stationery signed by Base F Leader and meteorologist D.A. Barratt, replying to an enquiry two years previously and noting that the base received a single mail delivery per year (a pencil notation on reverse suggests eventual arrival at destination only in 1954).
