GERMAN COLONY OF KIAUTSCHOU: Marvellous display of mostly locally-produced Picture Postcards in three sections: Part One German Colony 1898-1914 x59 at least half are early Undivided Backs with a few Gruss aus artist cards including a cringingly racist scene of a German soldier standing on the long pigtails of three locals, erection of the first homes & development, naval & military subjects including fortifications, two Japanese Geisha cards used from Tsingtau, 'Tsingtau Orchestra.../Now Playing at Riverview...' (a hotel in Tsingtau) etc, several multi-views and real photo types, Chinese occupations including fantastic 'Door & Window Market', a group of Chinese Officers, a dwarf selling "birds of good fortune", story-teller etc, about half are used from Tsingtau to Germany; Part Two 1914 Siege by Japan & Britain x20 including damage from naval bombardment & from the Germans destroying their cannons, three British cards of the South Wales Borderers & the gorgeous Japanese Crown Prince Hirohito card gifted to each of the Welsh troops; and Part Three group of scarce to rare German anti-Japanese propaganda & commemoration cards x19 including four racist artist cards depicting the Japanese as monkeys, six of the noble Governor Meyer-Waldeck, portrait of Pilot-Officer Pluschow who flew the last despatches from Tsingtau, multicoloured card inscribed '...7 Nov 1914' the day the Germans surrendered, etc; and a few strays. A wonderful social history collection that could be expanded, especially by adding cards from German POWs in Japan. [Kiautschou was an area of 550 square kilometers in northern China, "leased" to Germany after a German attack in 1897 in response to the murder of two German Catholic priests]
