#16, 24, 1868 ½r Grey on greenish gray, 1r Black on rose, two very fine examples displaying ample even margins all around, each tied by "Sto Domingo" c.d.s. (Hennan SD-G) to September 9, 1868 envelope to Paris, showing "PD" within circle and "London/Paid" transit in red, and additional c.d.s. in black denoting entry in France through Calais, all on front, and on reverse, arrival and "St Domingo" small c.d.s. denoting the consignment of this mail to the British P.O., very fine, one of only two covers recorded, in the imperforate early issues, exhibiting two different denominations, -the ½ real and the 1 real were the only available denominations from 1865 to 1879-, undoubtedly one of the most important covers of the Dominican Republic; as a proof of its significance, this item was sold at an international auction in Switzerland for CHF 48,300 in 1990; (Image)
