Danish West Indies, 1856 (Nov. 16) St. Thomas, D.W.I. to Copenhagen, Denmark. Blue folded letter with "St-Thomas, NO 16, 1856" double-arc backstamp and red "Paid at St. Thomas" crownmark with red manuscript "1/4½" prepaid rating, endorsed "p Steamer Atrato", red London "Paid" (12.1) and matching "P." oval handstamp, K.D.O.P.A. Hamburg (12.4) transit backstamp with "franco" script handstamp and "2" credit, manuscript "380 - 90" marking, Very Fine.
Estimate; $200 - 300.

In 1856, there were Post Offices of 6 foreign states in the Free City of Hamburg, one being the Danish (K.D.O.P.A.) that managed the postal traffic between Hamburg and Denmark.
