COVER WITH THE RARE hs "Exd JM" (JOHN MOORE) CENSOR MARK; Fine 29 Mar. 1814 EL (unsealed) from POW "Francois Pignatel" to the Mayor of Marseille endorsed "Procuration" (Power of Attorney) being a witnessed document proving that Pignatel was alive and asking that some debts that he owed as a crew member of the Pirate ship 'Le Jonqueux' be paid on his behalf from the "Caisse des Invalides" or prize money due to him. Sent from "Dartmoor Prison Royale pres Plymouth" with a mainly very fine rare Handstruck Dartmoor Prison Censor's "Exd JM" (John Moore) on the lower flap and was charged "12" (postage from Calais) on delivery. MARK; 17 Feb. 1799 EL (small piece lost with seal and some internal stains and neatly closed tear in address) from "St. Brieux" (from two friends with family news etc.) to "Citizen Cor, French Officer, Prisoner of War, in Mill Prison Hospital, near Plymouth, Devonshire" with a very fine "21/ST. BRIEUX" on the front and a partly fine London double oval "TRANSPORT OFFICE/[Crown]/G.R./PRISONERS OF WAR" mark (overstruck by horseshoe "PLYMOUTH" transit mark) on the top flap with 3 May London cds nearby. Charged "8[d]" inland rate with prepaid French "11" rate on the flap. Cor had been captured on the privateer 'Le Triton' (on 17 July 1798 by the British frigate Melpomene in the English Channel). NICHOLAS' - LETTERS TO P.O.W.s BUT HELD IN PARIS P.O.'s "CABINET NOIR": 17 Nov. 1806 EL (cleverly folded and with wafer seal) to "M. Capprou Officier du navire La Sophie, Prisonnier de Gaire a bor du Bienfaisant a Plimouth. Pour remettre au [mon]sieur Simont Peter Demange" (presumably Demange was illiterate so his letters went via his senior officer Capprou?) with partly fine "P.82.P/ST. DIES" on the front along with red Paris "P.P.P.P." and having "15" prepaid rate on reverse. There is a distinctive flattened oval red (censor's?) wax seal at the top of the inside page.; 18 Nov. 1806 EL (slight seal offset stain on front) to "Sieur. Douallan, Prisonnier de Guerre a bord du ponton Le St. Isidore a Plimouth" with partly fine "21/GUINGAMP" as sent unpaid and so returned to Paris. There is a distinctive flattened oval red (censor's?) wax seal at the top of the inside page.; plus 2 further examples for prisonners on board the 'Le Bienfaisant' & 'Le St. Nicholas'. All clearly never delivered - letters still in transit after Napoleon's suspension of Mail exchange from 21 Nov. 1806 are thought to have remained in the Paris P.O.'s Secret Office ("Cabinet Noir").
