Cat No:92

#92, 1880 50c Brown, single franking on December 13, 1880 cover from Havana to Veracruz, Mexico, tied by French "Havane/Paq. Fr. B No 2" octagonal "cachet d'escale" datestamp (Salles 1.439), neatly struck and repeated alongside, some minor rust spots not detracting, a very rare usage of a French maritime postmark on Cuban stamp; ex-Borromeo d'Adda. The French Consul post office have been definitely closed on 1st May 1877, when the Spanish Settlements in the Caribbean area joined the UPU. French steamers continued to call at Havana, but the letters had to be franked with Cuban stamps already cancelled, but the "cachet d'escale" was always struck alongside. This practice ended in 1881. In a very few extraordinary instances, this handstamp, showing evident signs of wear, was used as a canceller on Cuban stamps. (Image)
