(3) Covers w/ historical content: c.1863-65 Cover St. Louis to Ashtabula, Ohio, uncle to niece, from Benton Barracks (now Fairground Park), letter mentions "the greatest novelty is that the congregation is composed of white & black but each color occupies its own side of the house," and "They are organizing some colored troops here."; July 1898 on Railway corner card, Cleveland to Muskegon, Mich., religious letter w/ crisp handwriting mentions "I believe we should hold Puerto Rico, the Phillipines [sic] and the Carolines in the interest of religion and humanity," w/ more content of freeing from slavery & bringing civilization; July 1899 2ยข entire postmarked Manila, ms "Soldiers Mail" and long letter written at Candaba, Luzon, describing some battles to a doctor in Ohio, calling the natives "devils" or the "n" word, describing wildlife, diseases & more; F+ (Image)
