Patriotic design in green (Dietz MS-1 with Verse 29) on orange cover to Perry, Ga., franked with 1861 5¢ green (ample to mostly large margins) with manuscript cancel with "Winchester, Va./Jan. 22" (1862) cds at left, slightly reduced at right, Extremely Fine; Ashbrook handstamp on reverse. Scott No. 1  Estimate $3,000 - 4,000. An immaculate example of this rare River Scene Patriotic with "Dixie Land" verse. One of the most attractive Confederate Patriotic Covers extant.This allegorical scene depicts a riverboat and mountains, framed by cotton, sugar cane and tobacco plants. The verse used in this design is fascinating: "Death to each marauding band, Who would defile this glorious land -- The white and black man's Dixie!
