Confederacy, Workhouse Penitentiary, Charleston S.C., letter datelined "Charleston S.C. Sept 7th 1864" and written by Lieut. George Kies of the 18th Conn. Vols. to his wife, he writes "…I arrived in this prison Monday evening it is a very fine Prison indeed it was Built when I lived in this City with Mr O H Hellton it was then a work house and not a Military Prison…", Very Fine. Estimate  $500 - 750. The Workhouse was a large building located close to the City Jail in which Union Officers were confined. $0 (Image)
