Confederacy, Valdosta, Ga., 1861, 10¢ Black, bold strike of provisional rate handstamp on front and sharp undated postmark control marking on reverse of homemade cover with clear strike of "Valdosta, Ga., Aug. 18" cds with ms. "1864" dating to Miss C.C. Barnwell, Care of Col. G. P. Ellsott in Grahamsville, S.C., Extremely Fine, ex-Simon, Myerson; signed Ashbrook. Scott No. 100XU1 $2,000. A GORGEOUS COVER THAT IS UNDERVALUED SINCE THIS IS THE UNIQUE EXAMPLE OF THIS CONFEDERATE RARITY. Valdosta was incorporated on December 7, 1860, at which time the county government was moved from nearby Troupville. Citizens of Troupville relocated when the Gulf and Atlantic Railroad was built four miles away.
