Confederacy, Salem, N.C., 1861, 5¢ Black, provisional handstamp with manuscript "Paid 5" on lemon cover addressed to "Dr. J. F. Shaffer, Care of Col. Campbell 7th Regt., Graham N.C., "Salem NC. Aug 20" cds; missing sideflap and reduced at right into provisional handstamp, Fine. Scott No. 73XU1  $1,750. Dr. John Francis Shaffner (1838-1908) was born in Salem N.C. and attended Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia in 1860. He was mustered into NC state service in 1861 and service in various North Carolina regiments. He was confirmed as Surgeon by the Confederate Senate April 17, 1862 and was also a patient at Gen. Hospital #9 in Richmond and Winder. Post-war he practiced medicine in Winston-Salem. $0 (Image)
