Confederacy, Petersburg, Va./Aug. 27 (1861), cds in blue with matching handstamped "PAID 5" on clean cover addressed to Asst Surgeon Chas M. Morfit, C.S. Navy, Portsmouth, Virginia; missing back flap, Very Fine and choice, scarce Confederate States Navy use made all the more desirable by the medical connection, ex-Hambrecht. Estimate  $300 - 400. Dr. Charles McLean Morfit (1838-1925) received his medical degree from the University of Maryland in Baltimore and became an Asst. Surgeon in the U.S. Navy in 1861 but resigned the same year to join the C.S. Navy in the same capacity. He served on numerous vessels - CSS Ivy, CSS Arkansas, CSS Stono, CSS Albemarle, CSS Oconee, and CSS Chickamauga. He was also captured and imprisoned at Old Capitol Prison and Fort McHenry. $0 (Image)
