Confederacy, Morris Island Prison, Charleston, S.C. - "The Immortal 600". Orange cover with endorsement by "Second Lieutenant William E. Johnson, Jr., of the 7th South Carolina Cavalry" as a prisoner on Morris Island, addressed to his wife in Liberty Hill, S.C., postmarked with "Charleston, S.C./Oct. 31, 1864" cds and large (Due) "10" rate handstamp, endorsed "W.E. Johnson, Prisoner of War/By Flag of Truce", trivial flap tear, Extremely Fine and choice (Pictured in Monroe Book, pg. 103). Estimate  $1,500 - 2,000. The "Immortal 600" was a group of 600 prisoners, all Confederate officers, moved from Fort Delaware to be sent to Morris Island in Charleston harbor in August 1864 and held in open barracks exposed to mortar fire from Confederate batteries. This extraordinarily inhumane act was the Federal response to an equally repulsive act on the part of Confederates in Charleston, who exposed Union prisoners to bombardment from Federal forces within range of the city. This sorry chapter of the war ended in a stalemate in October 1864. Covers from Confederate prisoners imprisoned on Morris Island are very rare.A lovely example of an "Immortal 600" prisoner-of-war cover from Second Lieutenant William E. Johnson, Jr. This letter was written just before he was transferred from Morris Island Prison to Fort Pulaski Prison in Savannah, Georgia, on October 21,1864. For some unknown reason, the Union held up the last of all the Morris Island outgoing prison mail for more than one week after all the prisoners were moved to Fort Pulaski Prison. $0 (Image)
