Confederacy, Johnson's Island Prison, Sandusky, Ohio. Prisoner of war cover sent by Confederate Lieutenant C.W. Moore, 7th Virginia Infantry Regiment to his wife in Rapidan Station, Va. while confined in the Johnson's Island Prison, Sandusky, Ohio, franked with United States 1861 3Ā¢ rose tied by "Sandusky, O./Oct. 8, 1864" double circle postmark, sent via Richmond with "Richmond, Va./Nov. 11" (1864) cds with the "Due 10" rate handstamp added, Johnson's Island manuscript examiner's at top center of cover "Ex OW" ("Examined" with initials "OW"), Lieutenant Moore wrote the following detailed routing instructions on the bottom left corner of cover: "Care of Genl Comdg, Dept of Va & NC at Fortress Monroe Va, "For Flag of Truce" Boat Via City Point Va", Very Fine and attractive (Pictured in Monroe Book, pg. 101). EstimateĀ  $400 - 600. This an excellent example of a prisoner-of-war envelope with Union postage paid with adhesive and a Confederate postage paid with "Due 10" marking. Lieutenant Moore was a carpenter who enlisted on April 30, 1861, at Culpeper Court House, Virginia, as a Private in Company C, 7th Virginia Infantry Regiment. He was promoted to Lieutenant on April 26, 1862. On June 30, 1862, he was wounded in the right leg at Frayser's Farm, White Oak Swamp, Va. He was again wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg where he was taken prisoner and incarcerated in the Johnson's Island Prison until his exchange on March 14, 1865. In April 1862, the regiment had 700 effectives and was active in numerous campaigns. It sustained dreadful losses in various battles such as Williamsburg, Gettysburg, Drewry's Bluff, Cold Harbor, and Petersburg.
