Confederacy, Danville, Va., 1861, 5¢ Black on Dark Buff, press-printed "Southern" illustrated design on dark buff cover addressed to Thomas C. Williams, Care James Thomas Jr. Esq. at Richmond Va., no cds as usual with this provisional since town, rate and postmaster's name served as the entire marking; small faults including edge tear and some slight erosion in design, Fine appearance, ex-Marcus Brown; blue "W.H.C." (Colson) handstamp. Scott No. 21XU3 $9,000. A LOVELY EXAMPLE OF THIS SCARCE TYPOGRAPHED PICTORIAL PROVISIONAL ENTIRE. Thomas C. Williams and James Thomas are both connected with Richmond College. In 1866, James Thomas donated $5,000 to reopen the college since it was bankrupt due to the war and unable to continue functioning. The School of Law opened in 1870 as a college within the University of Richmond. In 1890, the family of the late T.C. Williams, a university trustee, donated $25,000 as the nucleus of an endowment for the law school. It was names The T.C. Williams School of Law in 1920. $0 (Image)
