Confederacy, Camp Sorghum, Columbia S.C., orange cover from prisoner-of-war to Enoch Cross, M.D. at Newburyport Mass., endorsed "Henry M. Cross, Lieut. of Mass, Prisoner of War, Columbia, S.C.", and with manuscript "Exd J.C. Martin, Camp Comdr"examiner's marking, franked with CSA 1862, 5¢ blue, horizontal pair, tied by bold strikes of "Old Point Comfort, Va. Dec 16" cds and matching "Due 6" circled rating handstamp for U.S. unpaid rate; cover faults including tear at right, F.-V.F., ex-Monroe. Scott No. 7  Estimate $1,000 - 1,500. ONE OF ONLY 20 RECORDED COVERS FROM CAMP SORGHUM, THIS BEING A PARTICULARLY SCARCE PRISONER USE BEARING THE 1862 5¢ BLUE. There were three prisons in Columbia.
