Confederacy, A Southern Confederacy! Free Trade With the World! printed propaganda patriotic design (C.S.A. PS-1) on cover to Howell Cobb (in care of his uncle John B. Lamar) in Macon, Ga. used prior to session, franked with U.S. 1857 3¢ dull red canceled by grid handstamp with matching "Athens, Ga., Dec 6" cds, with original enclosure datelined "Dec 4th" & "Dec 5th, 1860" with interesting content…There was as I wrote you a splendid & interesting concert L.C.I. (Lucy Cobb Institute) on last Thursday night…Your Uncle Tom had written a Southern Rights song which all the young ladies sang very sweetly; cover slightly reduced at right, Very Fine. Scott No. U.S. 26  Estimate $3,000 - 4,000. A WONDERFUL COVER AND LETTER PROMOTING FREE TRADE AND SOUTHERN RIGHTS FOR THE CONFEDERACY. This Propaganda design is reportedly one of three known examples and one of the rarest of all Confederate Patriotics. Throughout the war the Confederate government hoped to use international commerce to raise hard money and influence other nations to support the Southern cause. This rare slogan design promotes that effort. More effective, however, was the Federal blockade that isolated the Confederate States and disrupted regular trade routes. A similar cover with U.S. stamps over portion of design realized $5,250 hammer in our April 2009 Confederate sale. $0 (Image)
