Confederacy, 1863, 20¢ Green, Diagonal Bisect. Large margins, bright fresh color, tied by "Augusta, Ga./Oct. 6" (1864) cds on neat cover to Charlotte, N.C., small part of flap torn away, Extremely Fine and choice, a Gorgeous Bisect on this Immaculate Cover, This cover sold at auction in 1983 for $4,500, ex-Weill, Corwin (Pictured in Monroe Book, pg. 69). Scott No. 13c  Estimate $1,000 - 1,500. The Archer & Daly 20¢ green stamps were bisected by postmasters in a number of Confederate cities, and the halves used for ten cent stamps, when supplies of the regular ten cent value were exhausted or their requisitions for ten cent stamps were delayed by the war. Most of these covers bear diagonally halved bisects, but a few horizontal halves are known. During the early part of October 1864, the Augusta, Georgia, Post Office ran out of ten cent stamps and for about one week Postmaster James M. Smythe bisected the twenty cent stamps he had on hand. Approximately six diagonally halved bisect examples from Augusta, Georgia, have survived the war. No horizontal halves are known from Augusta, Georgia. Individual Post Office patrons were discouraged from bisecting a twenty cent stamp as evidenced by the following notice in the "Richmond Daily Examiner" of April 24, 1863: "POSTAGE STAMPS. From ignorance or other causes, a number of letters have been put in the post office boxes with halves of the twenty cent stamps attached to them for postage. These letters go to the Dead Letter Office. The stamps, of course, cannot be divided to represent different denominations, and the public are requested to take notice of this, to save their mail matter from the Dead Letter Office."Despite this public warning, some postal patrons continued to send letters using bisects. $0 (Image)
