Fortunately the Yankees have sent most of their troops away also & one regiment of negroes are all that remain in the neighborhood, deserters who came here a day or two ago gave us the information. Siege Train, James Island", docketed "5/13/64", light central toned spot, Very Fine. Scott No. 11  Estimate $150 - 200. Siege artillery is heavy artillery primarily used in military attacks on fortified places. The weight and size of siege artillery prevented it from regularly travelling with the armies. When needed, siege artillery and other material needed for siege operations were assembled into what was called a siege train.Major Edward Manigault, was one of the commanding officers ordered by General P. G. T. Beauregard to document his unit's daily operations, began a diary in July 1863 that would become one of the most informative records to survive the Civil War. $0 (Image)

Edgar Marks Lazarus was the son-in-law of noted Charleston merchant Moses Mordecai. The S.C. Siege Train was commanded by Maj. Edward Manigault. Scott No. 12  Estimate $400 - 600. After the U. S. Army evacuated Fort Moultrie in 1861, Gen. DeSaussure was placed in charge of the abandoned fortress. At the time of the bombardment of Fort Sumter by Confederate military forces, he was in command of artillery on Cummings Point. He later took command of the Fourth Brigade, South Carolina Militia, and held this position to the close of the War.
