Confederacy, 1863, 10¢ blue, die I, large margins, tied by Kinston, N.C. cds on Flag of Truce cover from a "Galvanized Yankee" soldier (a former Confederate soldier and Union P.O.W., turned Union soldier) to Marleys Mills, N.C. with both U.S. and C.S.A. examiners' markings; slightly reduced and repaired at left, otherwise Very Fine. Scott No. 11  Estimate $300 - 400. This cover was sent by Private Rains who was captured by Union forces at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863. He was confined at Point Lookout, Md.until Jan. 21, 1864 at which time he took the oath of allegiance and joined the United States Service. Rains was then assigned to Norfolk, Va. on June 21, 1864. There are five known cover from Rains to Mr. John Straley (evidently his father-in-law) sent while Rains was in Norfolk on provost duty, probably guarding some of his former countrymen.Includes a copy of an article on this very correspondence by Galen Harrison that appeared in the Nov-Dec 1987 "Confederate Philatelist". $0 (Image)
