Confederacy, 1862, 5¢ blue, Archer & Daly printing (large margins, nick at top) tied on back flaps of large magnificent silver gilt embossed valentine cover by blue "Columbia, S.C./Feb. 16" (1862) cds with matching (due) "5" as it was clearly overweight; addressed to Mrs. Emma Craig, Sumterville, So Ca; stamp torn in half upon opening, Very Fine, a spectacular & seldom seen item, Valentine uses in the Confederacy are quite scarce due to only a handful of opportunities as well as the exigencies of war, ex-Engel and Everett (his ME on back flap). Tenn., with original enclosure datelined "Camp near Vicksburg, Miss., Jan 22, 1863" which mentions another fight in a few days…The Yankees, it is reported, is landing three miles lower down than where they landed before…Their gunboats have been in sight for 2 or 3 days, Very Fine, accompanied by transcript and historical background.
