Confederacy, 1862, 5¢ Blue, full margins except just touched at bottom, tied by attractive red "Camden S.C. May 28" double-circle datestamp on immaculate orange cover addressed to Mr. Paul Romare, 6th Regt. South Carolina Volunteers, Gen Anderson's Brigade, Richmond, Va., Extremely Fine and choice, An unusual use addressed to a Swedish Confederate Soldier sent from his wife.; with 2012 P.F. certificate. Scott No. 4  Estimate $300 - 400. Romare was born in Torekov, Sweden in 1828. His father was a sea captain and Romare's first service as a sailor was on board a ship to the United States. He also sailed to Mexico, the West Indies and ports along the Eastern U.S. coast. He settled in Charleston, S.C. after taking ill in 1850. When the war started he volunteered for the CSA unit "Chester Blues" and served in Charleston and experienced the beginning of the war at Fort Sumter. Later his company was transferred to the Sixth South Carolina Infantry Regiment. He was later promoted to Quarter Master Sergeant and fought in the Army of Northern Virginia until Nov. 1863. He then transferred to the Confederate Adjutant and Inspector General's Office in Richmond, Va. where he remained until the end of the war. $0 (Image)
