Small defects, manuscript cancelled on folded cover datelined "Camp Altamaha/April 17th, 1862" to Hogansville, Ga. struck with bold red "Southern Express Co./Savannah, Ga./Apr 20" double circle handstamp express marking & manuscript endorsed in pencil "Paid 2/- from #5" (2 bits or 25¢), Fine, A lovely rarity which is illustrated in Dietz 1929 Handbook. Scott No. 1  Estimate $500 - 750. The somewhat philosophical letter, tells of expecting to be mustered out of service in a week, then being told that the Confederate Conscription Act [passed just a day before this letter was written] required that all state volunteer troops be turned over to Confederate authority for three years. $0 (Image)
