Confederacy, 1861, 5¢ green, Stone 1. Margin just a bit irregular at the leyf, tied by "Pocotaligo, S.C." cds on cover with military address to "Col. Joseph Abney, 22nd Regt S.C. Vol, Charleston S.C.", Very Fine and attractive. Scott No. 1  Estimate $100 - 150. Joseph Abney (1819-1870), a Mexican War Veteran and a Lawyer member of the South Carolina Legislature, first served as Capt of Co. A, 22nd SC Inf and then as the Colonel of the regiment until dropped during the reorganization in the Spring of 1862. He later served as Major of the 1st Bat SC Sharpshooters and then as Major of the 27th SC Inf after October 1863. He was listed as wounded at Drewery's Bluff (Va) 5/12/1864. He died in 1870 as a direct result of his wound. $0 (Image)
