Confederacy, 1861, 5¢ green, four margins, tied on reverse by "Branchville S.C. Jun 12" cds on cover to Dr. M. E. Carrere at Charleston S.C., endorsed "Pen. Po." at bottom left; cover toning and bottom flap removed, stamp cutout and hinged for display, Fine. Scott No. 1  Estimate $750 - 1,000. A RARE CHARLESTON PENNY POST USE DURING THE CONFEDERATE PERIOD. The Charleston Penny Post was an official U.S. Post Office service beginning in 1849, which is believed to have continued on a reduced scale following the outbreak of hostilities in 1861. Although wartime fees are unknown, this service cost 2¢ previously. Persons using this service normally added a street number and endorsed the cover "Penny Post". $0 (Image)
