Thomas to his mother in Augusta, Ga., each tied by blue Norfolk, Va. cds, each with original enclosure datelined from Pig Point (defenses along the Nansemond River on the south side of Hampton Roads), first letter of January 3, 1862 mentions "Humphrey Marshall's army" in Kentucky, second letter of January 30 contain interesting war preparation details about Burnside's North Carolina campaign…I hope your fears about the Burnside expedition are groundless and I hope instead of being in Pamlico Sound the ships are at the bottom (of the ocean) with mention of the storm, third letter of February 21st with interesting content…Our iron clad war vessel (the scuttled Union Merrimac, raised and rechristened the Virginia by the Confederates) is now finished and lying in the stream at Norfolk ready to come down the harbour. I do not know on what day she will make her attack on the Yankee ships opposite us., mentions other war events, etc.; some cover flaws, one with portion of stamp missing, Fine, accompanied by transcript and historical background.
