Confederacy, (Colleges) Oakland College, Miss./25 Feb. Cds tying 1861 5¢ green (four margins, manuscript cancelled) with matching straight line "Paid" at right on cover to Lumsden's Artillery in Mobile, Ala., reduced at right, Very Fine, a very scarce postmark. Scott No. 1  Estimate $400 - 600. Oakland College was founded in 1830 by Dr. Jeremiah Chamberlain. The school opened on May 14th with 3 students and by July of 1830, 250 acres had been given to the college and construction of the first buildings began. Chamberlain, an ardent Unionist and Whig, was assassinated on the campus in 1851 by a Sessionist. Oakland then moved into a period of slow growth, who's final decline was precipitated by the Civil War. $0 (Image)
