Confederacy, "Academy, Oct 5" (West Virginia), manuscript postmark with matching "Paid 5" rating on folded letter datelined "Hillsboro Oct the 5th 1861", addressed to Mrs. Christian J. Whetzel, Lewisburg, Greenbrier Co., Va.; included with letter is a typed transcript of content, Very Fine. Estimate $1,000 - 1,500. Interesting letter with a major reference to the Cheat Mountain Campaign (September 11-12, 1861) that became Lee's first Civil War campaign. "…It is said 24000 of the enemy came down of Cheat on 8000 of our men. Rumor says we put them to flight with the loss of 10 while their loss was great…"Both Academy and Hillsboro refer to the same area in Pocahontas County.
