Oval handstamp with second strike below dated two days later on 1853, 3¢ Nesbitt entire to Waltham, Mass., manuscript "Due 3" rating and indicia canceled by blue "Saint Louis, Mo., Jun 28, 1860" cds, with original enclosure with interesting observations about a trip up Clear Creek to the gold mines…Golden Gate, where we enter the Mountains through a very narrow pass where a small brook finds its way from the Mountains to Clear Creek. The gully where we go is very narrow crossing the creek 49 times from Golden Gate to a point about 7 miles, where we leave it and climb the Mountain for about two miles very steep and then go down again into another gully and so on for 10 miles, where we arrive at Gregory's digging's so called and in this vicinity there is Russell's Gulch, Lake Gulch, Missouri Flat, Illinois Gulch, Pleasant Valley and several others two numerous to mention.; cover with edge wear and small tears, F.-V.F., with 2023 P.F. certificate.

An unofficial Jefferson Territory was established locally in October 1859, but it was never recognized by Congress. Large black cds on 1853, 3¢ Nesbitt entire postmarked "Leavenworth City K.T., Oct 28 1859" and addressed to Iowa, interesting enclosed letter datelined "Rockey Mountain Citty" written by James Eggen which states writer is living 40 miles from Denver City…"I have built me a saw mill on Clear Creek and it works first rate and I have it all paid for I sell lumber from 4 to 5 dollars a hundred…The Mines is good, the California mines says they think as good as ever California was, but it takes more work to get it.", very minor cover repairs at top, otherwise Very Fine.

While still operating the Leavenworth City & Pikes Peak Express, Jones and Russell purchased the John Hockaday line, which had the government mail contract to Salt Lake City via the Platte River. Eventually, this led to the termination of the Republican River-Fort Riley route used by the Leavenworth City & Pikes Peak Express. Jones & Russell's express operated from July 1859 to February 1860, charging 25¢ per letter.

He also sold a corner lot to Clark from Brown Co. a Banker for $600. (Clark of Clark & Gruber minted gold coins). The Pikes Peak is still running most of the time and goes full of passengers…"; interesting content, Very Fine.

A WONDERFUL AND RARE LEAVENWORTH CITY & PIKES PEAK EXPRESS CO. EXPRESS WESTBOUND USAGE.

The Leavenworth and Pikes Peak Express Co. was formed by William H. Russell and John Jones in February 1859. The new service announced on March 12th with the first coach departing to Denver City on April 18th. This letter traveled on the seventh trip west to Denver City arriving in nine days.

A RARE LEAVENWORTH CITY & PIKES PEAK EXPRESS CO. EXPRESS USE.

The Leavenworth City & Pikes Peak Express Co. was formed in February of 1850 by William Russell and John Jones. This was the first express service between Denver City and Leavenworth City, initially charging 25¢ per letter. This marking is known used only from April to July, 1859 as Amos Streck arrived at Denver City on July 19, 1859 with the "Jones & Russell's Pikes Peak Express Company" date stamp that saw use thereafter.

AN EXTREMELY RARE ILLUSTRATED CORNER CARD FROM THE SANDERSON & CO. OVERLAND STAGE & EXPRESS CO.

Established by Vermont men, Jared L. Sanderson and Bradley Barlow during the Civil War, the Barlow-Sanderson Overland Mail Company first carried the mail and operated a stage line between Sedalia and Warrensburg, Missouri and by 1863, was also operating a line from Kansas City, Missouri to Fort Scott, Kansas. In 1866, they began to expand westward and transferred their headquarters from Kansas City to Junction City, Colorado. By 1867, the two entrepreneurs had established a route from Missouri to California over the Santa Fe Trail and changed the name to the Barlow and Sanderson Company. The company continued to grow in Colorado, becoming the largest stage line in the area and in 1874, the headquarters moved to Granada, Colorado. Two years later, despite rumors of bribery and corruption within the company, the stage line continued to expand. However, buy 1878, Bradley Barlow withdrew and the name of the company changed to J.L. Sanderson and Co. Overland Stage and Express Line. US$1,500-2,000 (Image)
