Cat No:13

#13 1861, 2½c Black, a mostly huge margined Sperati forgery, neatly tied by ”Bogotá” pearl oval to piece, offered together with an original example showing large margins all around, with faint crease on reverse; after a meticulous study, this mint copy seems to be the example of the original sheet position used by Sperati, but very slightly retouched to reproduce the forgery, the genuine example shows all the characteristics of a Sperati reproduction, except for the tiny flaw in “O” of “Correos” in upper left corner, a very interesting piece of research, only two original examples of this stamp taken as a base for the Sperati reproductions are believed to exist, together with one of the few Sperati reproductions extant, this item being unique on piece; 2009 Bortfeldt certificate; ex-Frohlich. Cat No:17

#17, 1861 20c Red, vertical half in a very deep shade, coming from the top of the sheet with large balanced margins, used on part of cover front addressed to Medellín, cancelled "Nare" in manuscript, with manuscript "10c" notation alongside denoting the denomination of this bisected stamp, this being an extraordinary practice that required the endorsement to be stated, faint horizontal crease passes through the adhesive at base, not detracting, one of the only two examples recorded of a bisected usage in this issue; 2007 Bortfeldt certificate; ex-Frohlich.This bisected portion perfectly adjoins one right half which exhibited on large part of cover front, also addressed to Modesto Molina at Medellín, with the similar "10c" manuscript indication -it belonged to the Charles Jewell collection sold in 1960-. This piece shows a Medellín datestamp of April 17 1863. Bisects were not officially allowed although tolerated by postal authorities. The 10 centavos corresponded to the single rate of that time.
