POSTAL HISTORY: (Aug 26) GB PPC to "JT Stavers/Eastern Extension Telegraph Co/Cocos Islands/co Manager Straits District/Singapore" with KEVII 1d tied by 'SOUTHEND-ON-SEA' cds, 'PENANG TO SINGAPORE/SE10/1909' marine-sorter cds, forwarded to Cocos on the first available ship, a couple of very minor blemishes. [In 1901, the Eastern Extension, Australasia & China Telegraph Co extended its submarine cable across the Indian Ocean via Rodrigues & Cocos. JT Stavers commenced his duties on the Cocos from 23.12.1908]
POSTAL HISTORY: 1953 (Nov 23) Inaugural Flight to Australia various styles of envelope & a postcard all with the flight cachet in violet or rosine (rare thus), two underpaid & taxed, several franked for registration but only one of them serviced (with R label #0003, tied by the Cocos cds), destinations include Bermuda, Fiji, New Caledonia, Ceylon & North Borneo, some duplication, fine to very fine. [NB: because of the large quantities of mail, the vast majority was processed at Melbourne before being sent to Cocos; only locally posted mail was actually processed on the day, including the one registered item]

POSTAL HISTORY: 1955-66 group with Australian frankings tied by various Cocos cds including 1955 airmail to Victoria with QEII 6½d solo and Qantas '...Christmas' airmail label and 1956 airmail to Tatts in Melbourne at 7d rate, 1958 registered air to Australia with blue/white 'COCOS (KEELING)/ISLANDS, AUST.' R label and 1966 Qantas envelope to Adelaide with QEII 4c solo, express airmail with 6c Birds & 10c Fish and registered with 24c Birds solo, etc, condition a little variable but most are fine to very fine.

POSTAL HISTORY: 1957 oversized OHMS cover (268x190mm) with 'Official Representative/Cocos (Keeling) Is.' handstamp in violet at lower-left, airmail to Victoria with Australia Aboriginal Art 2/- Crocodile solo tied by 'COCOS ISLAND' cds, a couple of relatively minor blemishes. Australian domestic rates applied: 4d for the first 1oz plus 2½d for each additional 1oz plus 3d airmail surcharge per ½oz. The item was correctly paid 4d + 2½d x2 + 3d x5 = 2/- for an article weighing up to 2½oz.
POSTAL HISTORY: 1957 (March 27) cover airmail to Newfoundland with Australia Aboriginal Art 2/- solo tied by #1 cds, very minor blemishes. The rate was 2/- per ½oz for an airmail letter to North America.
POSTAL HISTORY: 1966 (July 4) real photo postcard with a view of the 'COCOS ISLAND/ALTITUDE 10 FEET' sign & flags at the airport, airmail to France with a short greetings message in French, Australia Birds 13c Avocet solo tied by Cocos #3 cds, minor blemishes at the base not affecting the stamp, cancel or view. The rate was 13c for an airmail postcard to Europe (Zone 5).
POSTAL HISTORY: 1989 Herrick Company (New York) airmail cover to the Cocos Post Office but with 'CHRISTMAS ISLAND/7.3.1989' cds on face, endorsed "MISSENT TO/CHRISTMAS ISLAND" and "CERTIFIED STAMPS/FALLEN OFF/IN TRANSIT", 'PHILATELIC OFFICER/PHILATELIC BUREAU/COCOS (KEELING) ISLANDS/INDIAN OCEAN 6799' arrival h/s and '10 MAR 1989' arrival d/s on reverse, minor fold a and a few blemishes consistent with having been water-logged at some point of its journey.
