Benton from Lauderdale County, Tennessee, printed document from Provost Marshal's Office at Memphis, dated Dec 22, signed by both at bottom w/ age & description; 1863 Printed "Permission to Take Out Family Supplies." from Office Board of Trade at Fort Pillow, Tenn., dated 3/26/63, embossed Office of Provost Marshal seal; (2) shipping documents glued together, one from shipping company, the steamboat Diadem going from St. Louis to Memphis, loaded at Cairo with Benton's goods to be taken to Fort Pillow, items incl nails, stove & pipe, saws, lanterns & 1/2 dozen can of oysters, 2nd doc titled "Special License to Ship into Insurrectionary States and Districts" dated 10/31/63 at Cairo, also to ship by river to Fort Pillow "22 Pkgs [household] Goods & 5 bales hay for family use." interesting view into life during the war; folds, typical wear, gen F-VF (Image)
