Hampton City Despatch, Philadelphia, Pa., (2c) Black, cut to shape as always and with complete frame lines all around, tied to 1847 folded letter by blue "Philadelphia Pa./Aug 23" datestamps with integral "5 cts" rate, the stamp with an additional "X" handstamp in red and blue inks, addressed to Friendsville, Pa., cover with small stained spot at left, very fine; this is the only know cover bearing this stamp tied by a handstamp; 1999 PF certificate; ex-Gibson and Golden. (2c) Spaulding's Penny Post beautifully struck coin handstamp with the denomination deleted at center on 1847 folded letter from artist Vernon Henry to Buffalo, N.Y., red "New York/15 Dec" datestamp with integral "10 cts" rate, pencil receipt docketing, very fine; one of the truly great U.S. local stampless covers, being the only recorded example of the one cent handstamp with the "One Cent" deleted due to a rate increase on 15 November, 1847 to 2c; signed Sloane and accompanied by 2005 PF certificate; see article in the Collector's Club Philatelist by Petri, Vol. 32, No. 2;ex-Needham, Hollowbush, Petri and Hahn. Carriers' and Locals collection comprised of four parts, the first is an exhibit collection of Hussey's including mint #87L6 sheet of 46, 87L24 block of 24, 87L25 pane of 25, various "Time Posted" labels including a full imperforate sheet of 100, Hussey's reprints of Broadway Post Office (#26L2) sheet of 42 and Clark & Co. (#48L1) sheet of 20 and various stamps, next is an exhibit collection of Blood's with several "Striding Messenger" issues, #15L8 on cover uncancelled, a range of 1848-54 issues, including some on cover or used in combination with #11 and #15L18 tied to cover, the third part is a nice exhibit collection of Boyd's including stampless markings, stamps and on cover usages, one in combination with #11 as well as reprints, the final portion is a general collection arranged on stockpages, this includes better items such as $1.00 Wells, Fargo & Co. unused and used, however there are a great many forgeries and reprints noted throughout, the genuine examples being largely the more available stamps, plus the condition is quite mixed throughout so a careful inspection is essential.
