1810-23 Entire letters, two to Calcutta, the others all to Scotland with Ship Letter Deal (2), India Letter Deal or India Packet Letter London, two with "CALCUTTA / POST NOT PAID", one redirected from Banff to London as a free frank. Also 1842 entire letter from Sydney to Scotland "via Bombay pr. Candahar" with red oval "INDIA". Two from Delhi, a few faults. (9)

1820-31 Entire letters (4) and an entire, comprising 1820 letter from the orientalist H.H Wilson at Benares to the traveller and writer James Baillie Fraser at Calcutta with oval "BENARES / POSTAGE PAID" (Hammond Giles 1, manuscript date, "Benares" underinked and incomplete); 1825 letter from Hugh Fraser at Delhi to his brother William at Camp Jehasimpore and redirected to Dryrah with boxed "DELHI / Pt FREE" (HG 2, rare with only one recorded example, "Delhi" underinked); and 1826-31 letters (2) and an entire from India to J.B Fraser in Scotland, two with boxed "INDIA LETTER / DEAL" and oval "MERUT / Pt Pd" (HG 3) or manuscript "From Hansi P. Office 24 May 31", the other posted in London. The Merut letter sent by George Fraser contains a good account of a tiger hunt on elephants. (5).

c.1854 Entire to Rangoon bearing 1854 1a red (die 1, four large margins) with central cancel comprising a circle of cross-hatched lines, red octagonal undated "DONABU / PAID" backstamp. A very rare and unusual cancel and backstamp. Photo on Page 90. (Image1)

1855 (May 5) Entire letter written from The Baha Booden Hills, Mysore, to Dr Balfour at the Museum in Madras, endorsed "stamped ½ anna", posted two days later at Sheemooga bearing 1854 ½a (die II, four margins) tied by a rhomboid of dots, backstamped boxed "SHEEMOOGA / POST PAID" with manuscript date below. The writer, Dr H.R Oswald, has sent a specimen of Load Stone from the Booden Hills to the museum in Madras; Dr Edward Balfour has annotated the letter "Silicious Iron Ore from Mysore Hills, highly magnetic, the ore and quartz in alternate seems". Hammond Giles shows a similar "Post Not Paid" handstamp for Sheemooga (recorded 1836); this Post Paid handstamp previously unrecorded, but probably also originally used in the prestamp period. 1892 (Nov 2) Cover to Rangunia bearing 1854 1a red (die II, four margins) tied by "THANDACHERI" squared circle, arrival backstamp. A fine and very unusual late use of this 1854 ½a on an apparently commercial cover. Photo on Page 90. (Image1)

Manuscript Datestamps. 1866-81 Native covers comprising stampless cover with manuscript "Debaee 20 Jan. 66" (?) within a handdrawn circle, datestamps of Allygurh and Agra; stampless cover with manuscript "Guhmer 6/1/68" (?) within a handdrawn circle, datestamps of Bhewanee, Baraitch and Jeypore; and 1881 ½a envelope cancelled at Delhi, reverse with handstruck circle containing manuscript "20-9-81" and place in native script, Calcutta arrival c.d.s. Very unusual. (3).

Karachi. 1856-c.1880 Covers with Karachi cancels, comprising 1856 cover to Delhi bearing 1854 ½a and 1860 cover to Bombay with four 1856 ½a stamps both cancelled by Bombay Circle "95" numerals; 1863 cover to Ootacamund bearing six 1a stamps cancelled by Punjab Circle number "29" duplex in blue, and 1864 covers franked ½a with the same type cancel in black (2); 1865-67 covers with similar number "29" duplex with "Kurachee" around the datestamp portion (3); 1872 covers franked 6a to England with Sind Circle number "1" duplex (2); c.1880 covers with "K-I" All India type duplexs (3, two types). A few faults, an interesting study. (13).

Receiving Houses. 1861-c.1880 Covers with Receiving House datestamps including single ring cancels "PESHAWAR CITY RECG HOUSE" (2, one registered) or "KURRANCHE R. RECG HOUSE", double ring "BOREE BUNDER / R.H" (2), "KURRACHEE RECG HOUSE" number "2" duplex on a registered cover, "MADRAS / R.H No. 3" datestamp on 1861 cover bearing ½a pair cancelled by rhomboid of dots, etc., a few faults. (10).

c.1854-57 Covers (3) and stamps (19, ten on pieces) with 1856 cover bearing 1854 ½a from Bombay to Broach (fine arrival datestamp on front, ink erosion to address), and a single 1854 1a, both cancelled by a diamond of parallel bars (Cooper type 2); the others mostly with diamond of dots cancels, comprising 1856 cover franked 1856 ½a and 1857 cover from Jullendur (superb Paid datestamp on reverse) bearing 1854 ½a vertical pair, and single 1854 ½a (10, two with circle of dots), 1a (2) or 2a (6), a few faults, a useful group. (22).

Railways/T.P.Os. c.1860-1912 Covers and cards (25), stamps and pieces (7), mainly QV ½a native covers, cancellations include scarce boxed "MAIL GUARD / No. 2", "3 SECT 2 / UP / N. TRAIN" and "B.B & C.I. RY / MAIL GUARD" single ring datestamps, registered covers with boxed "M.A R.S DELHI" or "M.A PESHAWAR", etc., some faults. (32).

Banghy Dawk (Parcel Post). 1862-69 Handwritten receipts for parcels posted at Bombay, the first for a prepaid parcel to Rampoor with large boxed "BOMBAY / FEB 12 / 1862", the second for an unpaid parcel to Delhi with large octagonal "BANGHY / BOMBAY / NO 16 / 1869 / UNPAID". Two rare handstamps, very few parcel receipts surviving. (2).

Banghy Dawk (Parcel Post). 1871 Small native cover from Bombay to Hyderabad, sent as (or accompanying) a parcel, with large octagonal "BANGHY / BOMBAY / UNPAID" datestamp, also two South East Railway Sorting Office datestamps, part Paid c.d.s on reverse, a little shortened at right. 1847-1945 Covers and cards, the collection in an album including "Bombay Str. Postage / Inld do" datestamps (2), Experimental P.O or Temporary B.O datestamps (11), "Window" datestamps, "V.O" datestamps used at village offices (3), 1860 "NAGPORE / SORTED" and 1872 hexagonal "SORTING / KURRACHEE" datestamps, etc., a few faults. (70).

Calcutta - Experimental Time Datestamps. 1897 ½a Envelopes or ¼a postcards with single or double ring datestamps showing a time period at base, various periods ranging from 15 minutes to over 3 hours. (21).

Madras - Overland Mail. 1867 (Oct 15) Cover from York to Madras franked G.B 10d, with red "G.P.O / MADRAS / OVERLAND MAIL" c.d.s (Nov 13), reverse with red boxed (chamfered corners) "S.P.O No. 4 / MADRAS" datestamp used at Suburban Post Office No. 4 at Teynampett. The Overland Mail datestamps used on prebagged mail for Madras, the sorting and bagging done on the Suez to Bombay Sea Post Office from 1868; this the earliest recorded example of the Overland Mail c.d.s predating the start of the Sea Post Office, the Madras mails presumably bagged in London.

Madras - Overland Mail. 1872-82 Covers from G.B to Madras franked 1/4, 1/- (3), 8d, 6d (2) or 5d (3) all sorted and bagged in the Suez to Bombay Sea Post Office, nine with Sea Post Office datestamps, all with "G.P.O /MADRAS / OVERLAND MAIL" datestamps in red or black (9), various types. (10).

Madras. 1863-73 Covers comprising 1865-66 covers to London franked 2a yellow pair or four 1a stamps with the scarce "MADRAS / INDIA PAID" duplex with "C/1" within a grid in circle (Cooper type 17), also two 1863-73 covers with Madras "1" duplex (Cooper type 9) both with the year shown as "3", all fine. Calcutta. 1861 (Feb 16) Entire letter to Allahabad franked ½a, cancelled by octagonal framed "B/1", with three complete octagons and a broken inner octagon (Cooper type 7a, tall thin "1" without serif), also cancels on three stamps. Scarce. (4).

Suddur & Disbursing Offices. 1867-72 Covers with duplex cancels (Cooper type 9) with "S&D" after the town name, 1867 ½a lettersheets with cancels of Sattara, Tanna, Kaira and Ahmednuggur all without year shown, and 1872 covers franked 8a to G.B or USA with cancels of Surat or Ahmednuggur. All fine, an uncommon group, the cover to USA underpaid and charged 31c. (6).

1859 (May 24) Cover from Seetapore to England franked two 4a black stamps each cancelled "178" within triangle of horizontal bars, the scarce variety with bars running through the town number, possibly an experimental type of cancel. Cooper type 5a. Photo on Page 90. (Image1)
