Newfoundland, Airmail, 1930, 50¢ on 36¢ Columbia Flight. Position 2, nicely centered, bright and fresh, o.g.; tone spot on reverse, Very Fine, signed Bloch, with clear 1968 Friedl certificate.

The Newfoundland government overprinted 300 copies of the 36¢ "Caribou" issue for use on this flight. Only 100 were actually used: 65 from St. John's and 35 from Harbour Grace. After flying 2,650 miles, the plane was forced down at Tresco Island, off the coast of England. The "Columbia" was able to finish the flight, landing at Croydon Airport on October 13.

Sep 25, 1930" machine cancel to Hants, England, endorsed "Air Mail, Colombia" at bottom left, Harbour Grace (10.9) transit backstamp; top edge tear and vertical fold, Very Fine, with 1938 Kessler and 1974 P.F. certificates.

ONE OF ONLY 65 FLIGHT COVERS FROM ST. JOHN'S WITH THE 50¢ ON 30¢ SURCHARGE COLUMBIA FLIGHT ISSUE.

On October 9, 1930, a U.S. Navy crew of two left Harbour Grace in the Miss Columbia, refueled on Tresco Island (England) and arrived in Croydon on the 11th. 65 covers were postmarked at St. John's and 35 at Harbour Grace. The consignor has documented a total of 34 covers from St. John's and 16 from Harbour Grace.

Newfoundland, Airmail, 1932, $1.50 on $1 Dornier DO-X Flight. Block of 4, setting of four, o.g., bottom pair never hinged, well centered, bright and fresh, Very Fine.

The giant Dornier DO-X flying boat (which could carry up to 170 passengers) did not find a buyer in the U.S., so it was decided to fly it back to Germany in 1932 via Newfoundland and the Azores. 8,000 of the watermarked version of the $1 air mail (which traced the Alcock-Brown flight's route) were surcharged $1.50. The successful 1932 flight demonstrated the great advances made in just 13 years since Alcock-Brown. Use of the underlying stamp with its reference to their pioneering effort.

ONE OF ONLY THREE RECORDED FLIGHT COVERS FROM HOLYROOD.

A few covers were sent back to Newfoundland from Holtenau, Germany similarly franked. Only three are recorded, and one is signed by DO-X Engineer Harry Brewton - so it is assumed he is responsible for these interesting uses.

On July 26, 1933, 24 Italian SM.55X seaplanes under General Italo Balbo landed at Shoal Harbour, Newfoundland after a U.S. tour. 8,000 of the 1933 75¢ airmails were surcharged to $4.50 in block of four for mail on the return flight to Europe. All positions of the block can be plated.

Tied by two strikes of purple "Shoal Harbour, Newf'd, Jul 26, 33" rimless cds on Balbo flight cover, endorsed "via Italian Air Cruise, General Balbo to Italy" at top left, blue "By Air Mail" label, light strike of green Flight cachet, various appropriate backstamps and "Return to Sender" straightline; some machine offset on face, Very Fine, Only 70 Covers Canceled at Shoal Harbour, signed E. 70 of the 1,168 covers had the $4.50 stamp canceled at Shoal Harbour. The armada landed at Osti and the August 12th green receiver LIDODiROMA backstamp was applied on the train to Rome where it was stamped August 13th.

Newfoundland, Airmail, 1933, $4.50 on 75¢ Balbo Flight. Well centered, tied by "St. John's Newf'd, 26 Jul. 33" cds on flight cover to Carbonear, Newfoundland, blue "By Air Mail" label tied by bold green flight cachet handstamp, various backstamps, fresh and Extremely Fine.

The Balbo armada left Shoal Harbour on August 8, 1933 for Rome, via the Azores. Per Robert Lana of the American Airmail Society, 1168 cover had the $4.50 airmail stamp. 1078 were canceled at St. John's, 70 from Shoal Harbour and only 20 from Clarenville. The covers were numbered when placed in the mail pouches at Shoal Harbour, and received the green circular handstamp upon arrival in Rome. A few Shoal Harbour covers, and none of the Clarenville covers were numbered and didn't receive the handstamp as they were personally handled by the crew.
