Canada, 1852, Beaver, 3d red, two singles, both four margins, tied by 7-ring target cancels on 1853 folded cover to New York City, "London U.C. FE 13 1853" cds, partial Suspension Bridge cds and red "Canada, Paid 10 Cts" exchange office handstamp; small edge tear, Very Fine. SG No. 5. Scott No. 4  Estimate $300 - 400. At the same time Rawdon, Wright & Edson was losing the United States postage stamp contract it obtained a similar agreement to produce the first Canadian postage stamps. Canada agreed to this arrangement on March 27, 1851 and the parties entered into a formal contract on June 21, 1851. This contract called for the production of 3 pence, 6 pence and 12 pence stamps. The content of the United States and Canadian contracts, but for the names of the parties and description of the stamps to be produced, are believed to have been essentially identical. $0 (Image)
