12 10¢ blue Davis 1863 F/L w/ content to Benton, Arkansas, franked w/ 10¢ Die B tied by 7/25 Pine Bluff, Ark. cds (+400% premium in CSA catalog); 3-page letter refers to the war, "we are somewhat low-spirited here on account of our recent disaster" (likely fall of Vicksburg earlier that month) and "we have reason to believe our state is now or will shortly be invaded by a hearty federal force," which did come to pass as both towns were occupied by the end of the year, making this a "late usage" for a CSA stamp; signed Kimbrough 2007, stamp has rough margins esp at bottom; F (Image)
