(Governor of the State of Mississippi), with straight-line "Meridian Miss" Sept 1 datestamp at upper left and "Paid 10" manuscript at upper right, fascinating contents (from the "we the undersigned alien British ladies residing in Jones County" "want no more men taken from the county and ask for 4 to be sent back", regarding the treatment of slaves) (Meridian was strategically positioned at a major railroad junction and was the home of a Confederate arsenal, military hospital, and POW stockade. After the Vicksburg campaign, Sherman's Union forces and in February 1864 reached Meridian, where they destroyed the railroads and burned much of the area to the ground. After completing this task, Sherman is reputed to have said, "Meridian no longer exists.") (Image)
