POSTAL HISTORY: A completely unsorted array of covers & postal stationery with perhaps 20 or so QV items from as early as 1871, some on pages with limited annotation, loads of postmark interest including Railway TPOs, commercial airmails, registered including a couple of Avis de Reception cards, some 1950s material including overprints & two Book Post items, many are Chettiar covers but the condition of these is generally above-average and the balance of the material is generally fine to very fine; also about 50 philatelic covers mostly illustrated 1930s-1950s FDCs many with multicoloured cachets, also First Flights & a few unusual inwards items. POSTAL HISTORY: World War II 1939-41 airmail covers mostly with multicolour frankings including 'BURMA' Overprints/KGVI mixed frankings (one to NSW with 'EAC' perfins of East Asiatic Co), 'BURMA' Overprints to 2r & KGVI values to 5r (SG 32, Cat £75 x4+ on cover), good variety of rates including 6r & 7r8½a and 4r11a registered to New Zealand, various routes including 'Over the Hump' via China x6 (one paid 4r1a with superb 'T/C/50'-in-hexagon tax handstamp, and one by air to Hong Kong only then by sea) & trans-Pacific 'Clipper' covers x2, addressed to Britain x10 (one registered with Opts 1r & KGVI 1a with 'NBI' perfins), USA x3, Australia x3, Switzerland or India, generally fine to very fine. A very desirable lot. [Airmail services were suspended 23.12.1941. The 'reserve routes' of the Horseshoe service continued until 19.2.1942]  (27)

POSTAL HISTORY: 1943 (July 21) OHMS airmail cover endorsed "Government of Burma/Reconstruction Dept" at lower-left, to "US Office of War Information/San Francisco", the reverse with India 'SERVICE' Stamps 1½a 2a 4a & Overprinted 1r plus a further 2a x10 in the shape of a 'V' for Victory tied by 'SIMLA' cds, 'crown/PASSED/DHB 29' censor handstamp, American dater '1943 SEP 20 AM 8.54' on the face. The rate was 43½a = 2r11½a. Rare: Brian Pope recorded only one other item of mail from the Burmese Government in Exile. 'Burma 1901-1947' by James Song at pp387-391 recorded only eight items  Six of them are postcards, and there is nothing remotely like this cover.

POSTAL HISTORY: 1945 (Jan) OHMS cover with 'Government of Burma/Legal and Legislative Department/.../Simla S. W' imprint at lower-left, to Calcutta with Indian KGVI 'SERVICE' 1½a tied by indistinct Simla cds, boxed Calcutta arrival backstamp of 22JAN45, redirected locally on an affixed flap. Another rare cover from the Burmese Government in Exile. In the face of aggressive Japanese advances in Burma, in May 1942 the civil administration was forced to flee to India, where the government-in-exile was established at Simla in the Himalayn foothills, about 1900km West of Burma.
